Fire in Wasaga Beach

A massive fire swept through Wasaga Beach early Friday, destroying at least a dozen beach-side buildings in a commercial area of one of Ontario’s most popular tourist destinations.
Smoke still rises Friday morning from the remains of Wasaga Beach buildings devastated by a blaze that broke out around 1 a.m.(CBC)
The blaze broke out around 1 a.m. ET in the beachfront mall area and quickly consumed the buildings, which were all constructed in the 1930s and 1940s, Wasaga Beach Mayor Cal Patterson said.
“They were all wood, so they went up in smoke pretty quick,” Patterson told CBC News on Friday after spending most of the morning at the scene.
About 100 firefighters fought to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent group of buildings, but some suffered damage before the blaze was brought under control, Patterson said.

The winds were so strong, it quickly blew across to the other side,” he said.
No one was injured in the blaze, as the businesses were closed for the season, Ontario Provincial Police Const. Mark Kinney said.
“Fortunately, there was nobody there at the time,” Kinney told CBC News.
There was no indication of what started the fire, but fire marshal investigators have already begun their investigation, he said.
‘It’s never going to be the same’
The sight of charred frames where vibrant seasonal businesses once stood left owners and community residents stunned.
“I’m in a state of shock because we lost everything,” business owner Huguette Chadwick told CBC News Friday after she reviewed the remnants of her destroyed swimwear store Tropical Trends.
Chadwick said she had come to see the other stores’ owners and staff as a “Wasaga family” during the 15 years she had been in business there.
“These people have been here for years and now it’s all gone,” she said. “It’s never going to be the same.”
The Georgian restaurant, a popular eatery and bar, was gutted, but firefighters managed to save the hotel of the same name, the town’s mayor said.
Patterson spoke with the owner of the hotel and restaurant, who is in his late 70s, and said he was crushed.
“He’s had that business for years,” Patterson said. “He’s a mess.” For information on where to stay in Wasaga Beach please visit http://www.wasagarental.com/

Where to Eat in Wasaga Beach

There are a number of good places to eat in Wasaga Beach but you have to know where to go.

Just this past summer I was searching for something a little different and cam across an ad for a Caribbean place between Wasaga and Stayner called Angie’s Place. They serve jerk chicken, rotis and various curries. I had their goat curry in roti, my husband had their jerk chicken in roti and we also tried their fried plantain. All were absolutely delicious and both the chicken and goat dishes had a lot of meat and were large portions for the price. Angie’s Place address is 5968 27/28 Side Rd in Stayner. 27/28 Side Rd runs perpendicular between Sunnidale and Hwy 26th. Their phone number is 705-428-0591 and although they have a small sitting area they are take out only.

Another great place is Barcelos which is a small family owned Portuguese place on the corner of Mosley and Sunnidale behind the Mac’s convenient store. Their hours are a little unpredictable but they serve great breakfasts and all around good food although their prices for lunch and dinner are a little on the high end. If there is any kind of sporting event on tv their small patio is the place to be!

If you’re just in the mood for pizza then there are many places to choose from. A new addition in town is Pizza Depot (see http://www.pizzadepot.ca/menu.html) they are on 45th Street right across for the Great Canadian Super Store grocery store. They deliver for free on orders of $10 and more in the beach. I’ve had many of their pizzas and they are very good and their prices can’t be beat. They also offer 1 free dipping sauce with each order and those are very similar to Pizza Pizza’s dipping sauces. There is also a Pizza Pizza in town at Beach 1 on Mosley. I’m sure you’re all familiar with their menu but you can find that at http://pizzapizza.com/ . You can also try Toppers Pizza on Mosley near the Tim Horton’s plaza (http://www.toppers.ca/). Their pizzas are good too but their prices are comparable to Pizza Hut. Speaking of Pizza Hut the closest one is in Stayner at 203 Main St and their website is http://www.pizzahut.ca/ .

A good place for Sunday brunch is the “Family Restaurant” on Mosley in the small strip mall between Sunnidale Rd and the Tim Horton’s plaza. Brunch is served 9am-2pm (I’m pretty sure) the price is about $12 per person but they serve a lot of food. They have all the usual bacon, eggs, pancakes and fruit but also serve hand carved ham and roast beef and pasta. Their lunch a dinner menu are fairly good (sandwiches, soup, meat and potatoes…etc) and their prices and reasonable.

As far as ice cream goes an interesting place is Mr. Norm’s Nephew on Mosley around beach 3. They offer custom flavours of soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt. What they do is start with vanilla and blend in your favourite fruit, candy and other flavours. I tried their mocha coffee which they blended instant coffee and Nestle Quick powder into the frozen yogurt. The flavour was great but there were tiny crunchy grains from the sugar in the Quick powder. I would go back to try another flavour! Of course being a beach the town has many ice cream shops including a Dairy Queen.

A great fish and chip place is just outside of Stayner on HWY 26 just west of Sunnidale Rd. I want to say it’s called Blue Mountain or Georgian Fish and Chips. They close fairly early but have nice portions of yummy battered fish and chips.

If you have any other suggestions of good places to eat in Wasaga Beach please let me know and I will try them out and then maybe add them to this list.

New Development for Wasaga’s Main Beach Area

The developers making over Wasaga’s main beach area revealed their plans for a new theme park Monday, a project estimated to cost $350-$500 million.
Blue Planet, an indoor/outdoor theme park will be the hub of the beachfront development planned for the main beach.
The plan includes a 400,000-square-foot shopping plaza and indoor theme park connected by monorail to 8,000 parking spaces situated three kilometres away.
Dov Levy and his brother Armand are the principals of Beachfront Developments and say the park will include indoor surfing, snowboarding, skydiving and rock climbing in addition to an outdoor water park.
A video showing plans to transform the beachfront into a cross between Disneyland and West Edmonton Mall was shown at the grand opening of Copa Cobana Life Bar, the Levy’s latest makeover project. Beachfront Developments have recently renovated The Dard, Bananas Beach Club and now the former Friendly Greek restaurant.
“We made an aggressive decision to transform the area and make an impression on visitors,” said Levy.
He said in one year Copa Cobana will be torn down to make way for the new plans.
The company envisions a total redevelopment of the beach which includes a convention centre, hotels, restaurants, an amphitheatre.
Levy said Monday his investment partners have given him five years to complete the project but he thinks he can have it finished sooner.
He said they are focusing on the accommodation and theme park portion and the development will be phased in over years.
Levy said as of May they have acquired most of the beachfront properties required to complete the project.
A splash pad in which Beachfront Developments will partner with the municipality will be finished by next summer, this coming Labour Day at the earliest, said Levy. It is planned for the former beachfront waterslide location.
The former Miramar Motel site is being transformed into what Levy calls a presentation building to highlight the plans.
The plans have yet to go through the council approval process.
There are plans to have the Levys present the concept to council members publicly at a future committee of the whole meeting.

Tips for Renting a Cottage in Wasaga Beach

If you have been calling around or surfing the web looking for a cottage to rent in Wasaga Beach here are a few tips and questions to ask before you book.

#1 How old is the cottage?
There are so many old and run down cottages and cabins (even in cottage courts) that have just not be kept up. You may find yourself in a musty, moldy cottage with 70’s wood paneling on the walls, brown linoleum on the floors and pieced together furniture and appliances that might even be older then you! Do you really want to pay $800-$1000 a week for something dark, dingy, old and musty and be 1 block from the beach or do you want a well kept clean cottage with all of the amenities of home that’s 3 blocks from the beach for the same price?

#2 What do they offer?
Ask they have a full kitchen or just an efficiency. Also make sure they have items you are likely to use like a coffee maker, toaster, microwave…etc

Ask if the provide towels, bed linens and pillows and if there are laundry facilities on site (if you think you’ll require that).

Some cottage owners are even generous enough to provide their tenants with a parking pass good at any beach parking lot. That can save you approx. $10 per day.

#3 Do they have air conditioning?
I have been in a few cottages on the hottest summer days and it was unbearable even sitting in front of the 1 fan they had there. If they don’t have central air window units can do the job.

Ceiling fans and portable fans can come in handy as well. **Most cottages do not offer a/c at all.

#4 What do they have to do on a rainy day?
Ask about their TV…I’ve seen way too many ancient TV sets with rabbit ears and no cable (good luck trying to find more then 1 channel that’s not all snowy). Also find out if they have a DVD player or VCR and if they have any movies there for you to watch. You can also ask if they provide any board games or if you should bring you own. Some cottages even have arcade games or Foosball tables.

#5 Do they allow pets?
This is a good question for 2 reasons…#1 if you have a pet you would like to bring or #2 you have allergies and a dog or cat having been in the cottage a few days or weeks before your stay would have you sneezing and itchy during your vacation.
